Tourmaline

Tourmaline: complex yet versatile gemstone

Tourmaline is a versatile gemstone that comes in a variety of colors, from pink to green, and from blue to yellow. It's also a protective stone, with a positive effect on both humans and animals. In fact, tourmaline isn't just one stone, but a whole family of loyal allies!

Complex beauty

Tourmaline has a particularly complex atomic structure, which, for example, gives the stone its negatively and positively charged parts. According to the ancient Egyptians, the gemstone fell from the heavens to earth, striking a rainbow and absorbing every color within it. This included black and colorless! Tourmaline was brought to Europe relatively late, in the 18th century, by sailors. Today, it is found in Sri Lanka, Brazil, Pakistan, Western Australia, Afghanistan, Mexico, and Italy, among other places. Like diamonds, it is now often used in jewelry and art, in the manufacture of medical devices.

Black tourmaline

Besides the colorful gemstones, there is also black tourmaline. This dark version of the gemstone is also called "Schorle," and it has been known and loved since ancient times. In fact, we always assume it's black tourmaline when we simply refer to "tourmaline" (i.e., without a color designation). Both the Greeks and the ancient Egyptians believed that black tourmaline stimulated self-confidence and perseverance. It also seemed to have magical properties. When heated over a wood fire, it attracted the ash on which the stone was heated. At the time, this was a great and powerful mystery. Today, we know that this effect is electrical, comparable to, for example, static hair. The electrical charge is caused by the special composition of black tourmaline, which, when heated, becomes positively charged on one side of the stone and negatively charged on the other. This indicates the pyroelectric property of tourmaline.

Effective against radiation

The black version of tourmaline gemstone has several distinctive properties. For example, it can protect against the radiation of modern life. Placing black tourmaline next to an electrical appliance, such as a TV or computer, can help limit the radiation and prevent harmful effects. The quality of the stone is very important in this regard. In addition to colorful and deep black, there is also colorless tourmaline. This is the rarest form of tourmaline.

The golden triangle

Perhaps you've heard of the golden triangle gemstone? It's a powerful trio consisting of rock crystal, rose quartz, and amethyst. Tourmaline is often added to this for added protection against negative external influences, as tourmaline can both absorb (negative) and release (positive) energy. With its beautiful dual effect and complex structure, tourmaline perfectly matches the zodiac sign Scorpio and the month of November.
