Product information
This charm is designed as a fan that opens to reveal the message “I love you,” and is a nod to the fan language of the Victorian era. Perfect for fans of Bridgerton, lovers of historical romance, or anyone
who wants to send a sweet message.
Originally from ancient Egypt, India and China, fans were initially used to keep their owner cool and free of insects, and they also served ceremonial purposes. In the 17th century fans were adopted in Europe and soon became a means of coquetry, as well as memorable souvenirs for major events, such as the flight of the first hot-air balloon or the French Revolution.
The use of fans to send messages to friends and loved ones is popularly depicted in films and novels, with more than two dozen messages able to be communicated with a flick of the wrist. The meanings ranged from “I want to get away from you,” to “kiss me,” to “come and talk to me,” and everything in between.
The truth about this fan language, however, is slightly less romantic; a fan maker named Duvelleroy published a pamphlet in 1827 in which he defined the fan language to promote the sale of fans. His plan was successful, and he eventually became a supplier to Queen Victoria.
Although the language of the fans was largely a clever marketing ploy, some fans were used as part of a game called “Talking Fan.”
