Such bold bracelets were popular in the retro era, when bigger was better and Jewellery was worn to make a statement. The design is inspired by the tank treads of Allied vehicles during World War II, hence the name "tank bracelet."

Patriotic Jewellery was worn enthusiastically, even in occupied countries. Popular designs from that time included "V for Victory" brooches and pearls to commemorate Pearl Harbor. Cartier protested the occupation of France with their iconic "Bird in a Cage" design in 1942.
