Entourage drop earrings set with faceted garnet in a chaton setting. The earrings are French and were made in the 19th century. They are dormeuse ear studs, meaning the earrings fasten at the front and are put on from the back.
Dormeuse refers to the French verb 'dormir', which means 'to sleep'. Ladies wore their dormeuse only for sleeping; in case they were woken during the night, they wanted to look presentable.
