This ring is a fantastic example of Jewellery from the Arts & Crafts period. It is handmade from 14-karat yellow gold and features a cabochon amazonite gemstone in a bezel setting.
Arts & Crafts Jewellery flourished between 1870 and 1920 and emphasized the craftsmanship of handmade pieces by skilled artisans. The Arts & Crafts craftsmen, born from a desire to emulate the old-world craft guilds in reaction to the overwhelming mechanization of the Industrial Revolution, believed in the beauty of pieces that possessed an inherent wholeness, and therefore focused on “semi-precious stones” (such as amazonite, quartz, jade and moonstone) rather than more expensive gems like diamonds, sapphires and rubies. They were convinced their creations would endure longer if they were less tempting to dismantle and redesign later.
Another reason we find Arts & Crafts Jewellery so beautiful? The movement marks the first time women entered the Jewellery industry in large numbers — and they were generally very successful.
