Vintage gold ring with onyx cameo, 14 kt

A true vintage treasure, this gold ring is set with a cameo carved from onyx. The lapidary used the natural color variations and banding of the onyx to create a detailed portrait of a woman in stone. The white band forms her face and headband, with deeper lines cut into the black part of the gemstone to produce the texture of her hair and facial features.
Cameos have been made since biblical times and were wildly popular in the 18th and 19th centuries. Empress Josephine is seen as the start of the cameo craze, when court jeweler Nitot created a crown and matching bracelets for her using cameo gemstones from the royal treasury.
This ring bears a Dutch 14K hallmark dating between 1906 and 1953, evidence of the cameo’s lasting popularity.
