Vivid, green emerald cabochons are set in precious platinum, surrounded by more than 1/2 karat brilliant, sparkling diamonds in these dangling mid-century earrings.

Emeralds are among the most valuable gemstones, sometimes more sought after and prized than rubies and sapphires and even diamonds. Emeralds were first discovered more than 3000 years ago in ancient Egypt and the notorious emerald mines were worked by Egyptians, Greeks and Romans. Emerald gemstones are known as “the jewel of kings” and are often associated with royalty. Cleopatra wore emeralds, for example, not only to enhance her beauty but also to display her wealth and the wealth of Egypt. The scholar Pliny of antiquity wrote glowing praise about emeralds, because their vivid green color symbolizes a beautiful and hopeful spring.

Emeralds are often known for their “jardin” (the French term for “garden”) which consists of inclusions and gives each emerald a unique appearance. Although emerald has an 8 on the Mohs hardness scale, the composition and the inclusions mean that emerald is a stone that requires care when worn. Emeralds should never be cleaned in an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner.
